Florivida

Your connection to this state may be recognized, but not appreciated despite how formative it is to your identity. And in an era where identity is everything, how does one navigate having pride for a home so rejecting yet so beautiful?

The Sunshine State breathes life into us all, providing sanctuaries for both the wildlife and societies built atop them. Unfortunately, we continue to exploit and undervalue our environment’s rich biodiversity with damaging entitlement. These crimes were not committed by our hands, yet we are often left burdened with the responsibility to resolve them. Our generation has inherited an obligation to prevent our state’s decay, leaving us overwhelmed and defeated. However, we continue to combat this decay and pursue initiatives that will preserve our sacred home, both environmentally and culturally.

Due to our state’s distinct geography and location, we not only have a complex political relationship with our federal government, but Central and South America. We acknowledge and rebuke the colonialist actions that Florida was founded on, and rather choose to cherish the byproduct–an abundance of cultural beauty. With nearly a quarter of our population being immigrants, we have the pleasure to witness and appreciate the Hispanic, Caribbean, and Indigenous cultures that surround us.

Whether your feelings for this state are straightforward, complicated, coming-of-age, distasteful, collective, or individual, we each have a personal relationship that can be explored through this project.

Note that this is not a love letter to Florida. The Sunshine State has burned us in many ways. Our government’s repeated failure to protect its own people has only led to more conflict, contributing to the state’s already complicated political landscape. But we must not let these hardships obscure the beauty and community we have worked so strongly to build.

Do not allow the uncertainty to paralyze you. Defend and advocate for our ecosystem. Support the people that surround you. Explore your relationship to this state and allow it to inspire your creation.

This project is more than a runway, it’s a multi-media performance, intended to celebrate, criticize, and present Florida.
